SlashGear: Apple’s original iPad Mini no longer available online & at retail

Apple’s original iPad mini is no longer an option if you’re looking to grab a new tablet on the cheap. It’s likely that the iPad mini 4 will start at $399, just like past iPad mini models, with the iPad mini 3 dropping in price to $299 as the lower-cost unit.

Now before you tear up on me, it was time, it needed to be done. It’s presently available on Amazon for £195.99. It was among Apple’s most popular iPad models at one time, accounting for approximately 60 percent of the company’s overall iPad shipments.

Apple has officially discontinued sales of the first gen iPad Mini tablet, more than two and a half years after its launch. It was also the last iPad model that wasn’t 64-bit ready. At this point, the original mini doesn’t run all that well, so it’s not a huge surprise to see it go.

When Apple introduced the iPad mini with a Retina display, the company continued selling the original iPad mini with a 7.9 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display for a lower price. But even then we’d steer you toward a refurbished iPad Mini 2 ($249) or, if you have the cash and want the full range of iOS 9’s multitasking enhancements, the iPad Air 2 ($419).

For now, nothing has been spoken regarding the possible-discontinuation of the iPad mini, although the quiet removal off the website and the stores is nothing but a sign of things to come. Touch ID is a fingerprint sensor which can unlock the device, authorize purchases from the AppStore and iTunes, and integrate with Apple Pay for mobile-tablet purchases.
