OnePlus 5T, iPhoneX, Pixel2 XL, Note8: Which one to buy?

Budget smartphone makers OnePlus have release a new flagship that uses 3D face recognition. It’s largely evaded questions of how this is possible, maintaining a loyal following of power users and tech enthusiasts sold on its high-performance phones with near-stock Android. That’s great news for people looking to buy the handset, but it might be a bitter disappointment to those who bought its predecessor just a couple of months ago. The visual experience offered by the Samsung Galaxy Note8 is definitely better than the one of the OnePlus 5T, mainly due to the fact that this is a SuperAMOLED display. As you can imagine, we didn’t get enough time with the device yet to test the battery life. The announcement also pointed that the OnePlus 5T will get the beta in late December. We will, however, describe some highlighted features. The OnePlus 5T sports a length of 156mm, is 75mm wide, 7.5mm in thickness and weighs 162 grams. It comes with Fingerprint sensor on its back side. The display is also more or less edge-to-edge. Users can change the colour temperature to their liking. In its defence though, the OnePlus 5T has a 80.5 per cent screen-body ratio, just a bit lesser that iPhone X’s 82.9 per cent.

With the telephoto lens gone, the camera loses its optical 2x zoom capabilities. They both come with F1.7 aperture, and can record 4K video.

In lighting below 10 lux, the OnePlus 5T will switch to the secondary camera, which can also combine four pixels into one to produce cleaner images in low light. The company also boasts a better Portrait mode to improve the noise reduction. This feature is not available in the OnePlus 5T. The app UI has also been simplified with gestures to make mode switching easier. The handset runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box and it will reportedly get the Oreo upgrade soon. The chipset and other internal hardware specifications remain the same but the flagship phone will absolutely deliver an immersive experience. Why no Oreo? OnePlus did not say, but finger’s crossed it will land via an update before the close of the year. Well, at least, OnePlus 5 users have something to laugh about.

Never settle? The OnePlus 5T settles in a lot of little ways that may still make it the best $499 phone on the market, but it falls short of being the “flagship killer” that OnePlus originally promised.

The starting price of the phone in India is Rs 32,999.
