The unexpected sensation of the Colin Trevorrow-directed, Steven Spielberg-produced fourth entry in the franchise had turned Disney’s $175 million 3-D “Inside Out” into an underdog expected to merely nip at the heels of “Jurassic World“. “If you look at last weekend, around the world, how many people were in theaters when ‘Jurassic World’ made its debut?”

Meanwhile its opening estimated gross of $60 million means that it’s inline to match the impressive opening of Disney’s ‘Big Hero 6’ back in November, which took in $56 million. Its weekday numbers were exemplary as well, helping it to trend ahead of Marvel’s Avengers and easily become the fastest movie to ever reach the $300 million mark (in just eight days).

Pixar’s last film Monsters University in 2013 collected $268.5 million at the domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo, well behind the $368.1 million registered for Despicable Me. However, it will be interesting to see how the Disney feature does against last weekend’s box office succeeder “Jurassic world“. But, it is Pixar’s first film not to open at No. 1, but does that really matter at this point? Pete Docter’s film ranks as the second biggest Pixar opening of all time, just behind Toy Story 3, which debuted with $110.3 million. It’s expected to earn almost 8 million U.S. dollars this weekend.

EVEN BEFORE this year’s “Star Wars” movie hits theaters, other films that have George Lucas in their DNA are dominating the box office, leaving records shattered in their large wake.

Inside Out“, $91.1 million ($41 million international). Overall, the studio spent $31.5 million on big movies in national TV spending. Produced for US$175 million, it had a concept that defied an easy sales pitch and could have gone soaring over the heads of younger moviegoers. Open Road Films is distributing the film after acquiring it at Sundance this year. The film will end with around $190 million domestic.

“When you have two movies doing nearly $200 million in the marketplace, it’s tough for much else to cut through”, said Cassidy.

In terms of long term play, the Pixar mid-June originals tend have somewhat inconsistent weekend-to-final multipliers, depending on the breaks. It has a total box office take of $4.8 million and with a strong critical sentiment (88% on Rotten Tomatoes), word of mouth should continue to boost this one depending on Roadside Attractions’ expansion plans. But, “Jurassic World” has what they do not – all demographics, and repeat customers. Where available, the latest global numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.
