Under Massachusetts law, Hernandez’s conviction could be vacated because he never had the chance to appeal before his death, which means the rest of his National Football League contract and pension could be released to his estate.
All first-degree murder convictions in MA trigger an automatic appeal. Hernandez’s appeal was still in its early stages and hadn’t yet been heard when he hanged himself early Wednesday.
