RESULTS of four state elections in India announced last week gave Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party a massive victory in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state.

Adityanath also took a dig at Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and said that their alliance was the reason behind their defeat. It was his personal opinion and the party did not endorse it, they would say.

With such a big minority population and the kind of statements this man has made, how do you build trust in the leadership in Uttar Pradesh? It is time to have a little patience and watch how he unfolds in his new role.

‘Polarisation’ Opposition Congress Party leader Manish Tewari criticised Mr Adityanath’s appointment, saying it was a “harbinger for greater polarisation”. He also went to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence, met BJP president Amit Shah at party’s headquarters and later called on President Pranab Mukherjee. Perhaps trying to silence his critics, he insisted that he would be the CM for every caste, creed, citizen and region of UP.

“It’s bewildering to so many people, because Adityanath’s public image is not at all in sync with Modi’s image”, said A K Verma, a political scientist who heads the Centre for the Study of Society and Politics in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The Chief Minister also accused the earlier UP government of not utilising most funds allocated by the central government and vowed to follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan of “sabka saath-sabka vikas”. “The burden of his performance now rests on the prime minister, because there’s no doubt he was Modi’s choice”. However, the Chief Minister’s suggestions will be taken into account.

Addressing his first press conference as the Chief Minister, Adityanath said, “our government is fully committed to fulfil the promises that were made before elections”.

“They will divide Uttar Pradesh on communal lines. Besides tampering with the EVMs, it (BJP) has betrayed the OBCs and Brahmins”, Mayawati said. Some electronic channels instead of looking some possible good in coming times immediately started discussions on the religion and caste based social indicators.

Crediting Modi for re-opening Gorakhpur’s Fertiliser Factory which had been shut for 26 years to calling him an worldwide icon whose development model is being aped across the world Adityanath sang paeans for Modi. The religious minorities and the socially educationally “depressed” classes may be slowly and slowly understanding that those who have been boasting of commitment towards their welfare have instead pushed them in more of isolation and in an environment full or only “rivals”.

It is an established fact of the rough and tumble world of Indian electoral politics that the party which wins Uttar Pradesh wins the country.
