The usually prolific Ronaldo has had his quietest campaign in front of goal in the league since 2010 but made an emphatic return to form on Wednesday by scoring both goals as Real earned a crucial 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg. “To be able to reach this mark is an honour and against a team like Bayern it is better still”, Ronaldo, who scored both goals, told beIN Sports Spain.

Real still have to fend off a likely Bayern fightback on Tuesday, but they remain on course to become the first team to retain the Champions League.

And the former Manchester United forward feels honoured by the achievement, telling Madrid’s official website: “It’s a very big honour to score 100 goals in Europe”.

Real capitalized on their numerical advantage and sealed the deal in the 77th minute when Ronaldo wrapped up his brace after slotting home Marco Asensio’ s cross to become the first player who reached 100 goals in an UEFA club competition.

“The medical department did a geat job trying to get him fit, but the risk was too great”, Rummenigge said after the defeat. “Hopefully Real Madrid win and reach the semifinals”, he said.

“We were in total control during the first half but we weren’t subsequently able to exploit the spaces”, Bayern’s Philipp Lahm told German TV. “The coach [Zinedine Zidane] has managed things well, with good squad rotation, and we’re ready for the final stage of the season”.

“Bayern have won only three of their 11 European matches at the Bernabeu – the last of which was on penalties in 2011/12 after it finished 3-3 on aggregate”.

Either way, Madrid appear to be in a comfortable position to be the first team to knock Bayern out before the semi-finals for the past few years.

Despite getting two vital away goals and an all important win, Los Blancos boss Zidane was vocal about not getting more goals on the night.

“You have to pick your chin up, put the extra percent on it, and put in an outstanding performance in Madrid”, he said.

Zidane is expected to make a series of changes from the side that started in Munich with the second leg in mind. They were unique because we were losing and it was hard to go back.

Real pressed home the numerical advantage as Ronaldo tapped the ball between the legs of Bayern’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for the victor on 77 minutes.
